What Do Your Food Cravings Actually Mean?

Have you ever experienced a sudden hunger impulse that you just cannot explain? Maybe you explain it with your period or with some other physical conditions that are bringing some change in your eating habits, but it can be very annoying. Not to mention that you might be tortured by these cravings when they are rather unhealthy and you want to maintain your diet. Yes, bikini season is here and for some of us bloating is a big deal.

However, you might be unfamiliar with the fact that food cravings are not always what they seem to be. They can often be signs that your organism lacks something that you really, really need and it does not need to be an unhealthy desire. In fact, you need to educate yourself about nutrition and the wishes of your body, so that next time you feel you want to fill up on French fries, you can actually go for something you will feel less guilty about.

  • When you are craving something very salty, that means your body actually needs chloride. The good news is that there are healthier alternatives, like unrefined salt, that you can include in your diet. These cravings can occur when you are chronically stressed, so consider more time for relaxation.
  • In case you have a great desire for sweets or sugar, you might be lacking energy. Glucose is what your body needs in order to fuel cellular energy production. Diets and even starvation are terrible for this, as your body begins the inflammatory process of breaking down fat and proteins to create glucose. Actually, you do not need to eat candy to get glucose: you can always go for seasonal fruit, roots and below ground veggies. An apple, a carrot, or a tomato? Yes! Honey, maple syrup and very small amounts of table sugar can be also very helpful.
  • There are times when you might feel an urge for consuming bread and pasta. We do not say that you should avoid them at all times, but it is better to have a backup plan in case you want to avoid the tons of carbohydrates. What you should go for are meat, fish, nuts and beans.
  • Fat cravings are really dangerous. Still, saturated fat is what you need in your diet. Meals that contain avocado, coconut oil, butter and cream are important especially if you are on a low-fat diet. Healthy fat is not necessarily bad: just combine it with a bit of exercise!
  • Chocolate cravings are incredibly popular. When you want to grab that chocolate bar and eat it all up, you should probably know that your organism actually needs magnesium or copper, most commonly the former. Dark chocolate is a good option. Fresh fruits are the other best source of magnesium.
  • In case you feel the need to have a cup of coffee, you are probably lacking phosphorus, sulfur or iron. For these elements, you need to include some cheese, nuts, dark leafy greens, cauliflower, broccoli and cranberries to your meals.
  • When you want to have something sour, like lemon, lime or vinegar, you simply crave acidic foods. You can be lacking stomach acid. Strong stomach acid is your body’s first line of defense and its purpose is to sterilize your food, disinfect the stomach and break down foods. It is important to consume occasionally some sour foods.
  • Last but not least, you might feel a need to add some red meat to your diet. Probably your body has low levels of iron, zinc or amino acids. You should already know that if you still have cravings, even if you are consuming red meat regularly, you might be digesting it incorrectly. Fish, nuts, beans and low-fat dairy products can serve as substitutes for red meat, if you want to abandon it for some reason.
