Muesli – Breakfast for Champions?

What is muesli?

It is a dry breakfast meal for your early mornings (or the lazy ones, as a matter of fact). It is a combination of fruit, extruded cereals and nuts. Most often people pour milk or fruit juice over it, as it can be very dry on its own. For the first time, muesli was presented to the public in the early 20th century by a Swiss doctor, who learned about it from his visit to a small mountain hut in the Swiss Alps. For decades muesli has been competing with breakfast foods like sausages, eggs or ham. Still, in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century people in USA and in western Europe started to show a strong affinity towards it. Even in England the Dutch breakfast became widely accepted. Nowadays, tons of people can get it at the supermarket and there are lots of variations of the recipe.

What are muesli’s nutrition benefits?

Muesli is actually a great start of your day for several reasons. First of all, it can provide you with enough energy to begin a new day of the week. Also, it gives a long-lasting feeling of fullness and you will not get hungry in just an hour. It contains lots of fiber that help your digestive system. It can bring vitamins, minerals and calcium to your body. Last but not least, it is delicious and you can always change the taste depending on the nuts or fruit chosen for your muesli breakfast.

Muesli contains a carbohydrate complex that is gradually digested. Pressed grains (called popularly but incorrectly “nuts”) contain carbohydrates with a low to moderate glycemic index and assimilated dietary fiber and a small percentage inferior (6-10%) protein. Fruits are rich in easily digestible sugars and vitamins. On the other hand, milk contributes with complete protein, carbohydrate lactose, less fat and calcium. Often nuts are added to ready muesli in order to increase the protein content of the food to 12-15%.

But what is not musli?

There are some misconceptions in modern society about the nature of muesli. Corn crusty, dry starch molds for milk and other foods are wrongly called muesli. Their right name is dry grain breakfasts.

How many types of muesli are there then?

First of all, you have classic muesli. It contains only three products: dry fruit, nuts and pressed grains. The next kind of muesli in existence are specialized ones. Companies that produce this type of breakfast tend to reach out to particular target groups. They might advertise a certain product for women who want to lose weight, for children or for diabetics.

What are the basic ingredients of muesli?
