Learn How To Match Food & Wine

Drinking wine during your dinner is not just to swallow easier the food, the wine is flattering the taste of the food if chosen properly. There are some guidelines to match food and wine, but after all it’s your choice and you have to experiment until you find the perfect combination between the dish and the type of wine. If this combination is not well maintained, you may decide that the wine is bad or the food isn’t cooked well. When you feel that something is wrong, don’t throw away neither the wine, nor the food. They are just not matching – try the food and the wine separately and if you still don’t like them, then throw them away. Take a look at some basic guides, which will help you to match the perfect wine with the perfect food.

First of all you should know that it’s not only about the type of food (meat, veggies, dry, saucy), a big part of the whole thing is the way of cooking – roasted, baked, poached, steamed, marinated, seasoned, cooked in sauce and so on.

It is easier to match a food with a wine, when the dish is simple. If it has many flavors it will dominate and then you should choose simple, cheap wine that won’t scream for attention.

Often the contrast between food and wine is a feature that will be a good decision. A perfect example for this is the perfect combination between sweet dessert wines or very fruity reds and salty foods.

If the food is acidic itself, you may reconsider serving it with wine. The vinegar dressings should be set away if you want to pair the food with wine, because the acidity of the food will make the wine taste sweeter, which won’t taste like a perfect match.

If your food is bitter like greens, herbs and olives you should match it with a young red wine, which will flatter this dominant taste of the food.

It is a common mistake that you should match sweet wine with desserts. It is really a mistake. To show perfect taste and sense of food and beverage you should combine chocolate with liqueur rather than with a sweet wine. Match a sweet wine with food that isn’t too sweet.

Here are some basic foods and flattering wines for them:

Beef and lamb. Red wines, which are suitable – Sangiovese, Cabarnet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir.

Chicken. White wines are perfect for chicken. If it is grilled or roasted, choose a Chardonnay, if it is in sauce, go for Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fish and seafood. Again white wine, such as Chardonnay and Semillon for grilled fish. Pinot Noir is perfect for a hearty fish stew. A flaky fish will be perfectly flattered by Riesling or a Chardonnay.

Spicy food. Riesling or sweet Gewurztraminer.

Pasta and pizza (or tomato based meals). Barbera, Sangiovese or Zinfandel.

Duck and quail will perfectly go with Pinot Noir and Shiraz.

It is a well known fact that wine is the BFF of the cheese. Hard cheese will taste better with full-bodied wines, for example Shiraz and cheddar. Dry wines are perfect for soft cheese, such as Riesling, Marsanne or Viogner. And our favorite blue cheese will be flattered by sweet wine.
